Hiking Route
A Rúa - Monforte
Hiking route from A Rúa, passing through Quiroga, Pobra do Brollón, and Monforte de Lemos.
We present you a very special hiking route through the Ribeira Sacra. On this route, we will cover the first two stages of the “Camino de Invierno,” (Winter Way) one of the most beautiful paths to Santiago.
This is an ancient variant of the Camino Francés (French Way), although it was officially recognised as a “Jacobean route” by the Xunta de Galicia in 2016.
Do you want to explore these two stages?
1st Stage: A Rúa - Quiroga (28 Km)
This is a route of low difficulty, where you will be accompanied by the Sil River’s course, and you will enjoy beautiful views and characteristic villages of the Ribeira Sacra.
During this journey, you will encounter wonders like the Montefurado Tunnel, a Roman construction used in their quest for gold in the waters of the Sil River, and the castle-fortress of Os Novaes.
Finally, you will reach Quiroga, a beautiful town with 3,300 inhabitants, where you can enjoy its museums, murals, cuisine, and its people. It will captivate you.
2nd Stage: Quiroga – Monforte de Lemos (33 Km)
On the second day of journey, you will encounter a very different path with fewer towns along the way. The Ribeira Sacra has always been considered a place for reflection and meditation, and during this stage, you can enjoy solitude and nature, just like the monks of the past.
The difficulty level increases to medium-high as you ascend to altitudes of over 500 meters above sea level. In this stage, you will also cross the basins of the Sil and Lor rivers, pass through the lands of O Brollón, and enjoy unparalleled views.
Your destination will be Monforte de Lemos, the capital of the Ribeira Sacra. Here, you will discover the Galician Escorial, the Jewish quarter, the Tower of Homage, and the architectural complex of San Vicente del Pino. You can also indulge in its cuisine and magnificent wines.
